If your house includes a garage, whether attached or unattached, you have a great asset with endless possibilities. Of course, the primary purpose of the garage is to house the cars, but how many people do we know that fill the space with tons of stuff, not even using it for its intended purpose? It’s time to clean out the junk and put this valuable space to good use.

Many people fall into the “garage is my dumpster” trap, so the first step in getting the most out of the garage is to clear out the clutter. A good rule of thumb is to discard anything you haven’t used in six months with the obvious exception of seasonal items like yard tools and sporting goods. Once the place is cleaned out you’ll need to store what’s left. Think “up” for this task. Use the rafters above your head by laying pieces of scrap plywood between them, creating shelves. All of a sudden, in the same way virtual data rooms are filled with resources but with unlimited space, your garage now has plenty of tools in store but with plenty of room to spare. Use this space for things like skis, snow sleds, extra lumber products, tents and camping gear, etc. For bicycles, you can install threaded hooks in the rafters near the back wall. Create a few loops with some rope and hang those bikes out of the way. Threaded hooks can also be installed on the exterior walls and used as a place to hang garden tools. An inexpensive aluminum shelf or two in the corner is a good place to store gas cans, automotive supplies, and paint cans.
Now… what to use the garage for?
If you live in a region with a decently cold and snowy winter, definitely use the garage to park the cars during this season. There’s nothing like leaving for work knowing you don’t have to spend fifteen minutes clearing snow and ice from your car first. Just open the garage door, turn the key in the ignition and off you go. To make things even better, any snow the car collects during the day will melt off in the garage overnight. Just be aware that you’ll need to squeegee the water out every few days.
During the summer months, or for those living in warmer climates, the garage makes a great place for outdoor entertaining. Purchase a screen unit to cover the door opening, throw in some lawn chairs, a table or two, maybe a portable stereo, and you’re good to go. The light and breeze gives the feel of being completely outside, while the garage offers protection from the sun and insects. Just make sure to lock it up at night, especially if you leave out anything valuable.
For more garage ideas just consult your imagination. With such an open and free space available, I’m sure you can think of something great.
