Storing Like a Pro

by admin on March 31, 2009

Have you seen those TV shows that feature a couple looking to upgrade to a bigger house? I find it very curious that the programs rarely show the couple discussing storage needs. The reality is that most of the time we upgrade to a larger home, it’s due to the fact that we’ve run out of space…. space for all our stuff. With that said, if you’re running out of space for your belongings, here are four tips to help you make the best use of your storage space. Home upgrade or not, these tips will help you keep organized.

1. Get rid of things you don’t use
We live in a world of pack rats where accumulation of things is equal to social status. You can break free from this burdensome mentality by asking yourself, “How often do I use this stuff?” A good rule of thumb which can be adjusted according to your circumstances is this: if you haven’t used something within the last six months, you probably won’t use it very often in the future. Get rid of it. The obvious exceptions to this are seasonal items and family keepsakes like men’s rings and billy boots. Try to avoid the “I may need this someday” mentality; the flip-side is that you probably won’t.

2. Organize
Throwing things haphazardly into a closet or down in the basement leads to a confusing mess that can be overwhelming to deal with. For a minimum investment you can organize your things using plastic storage bins. Family photos in one bin, winter clothes in another, games and puzzles in another; you get the point. Clear bins are the best options because in addition to the label you’ll put on it, you can also see through it to some degree. When the storage bins are full, group them by categories, storing groups in the same area when possible.

3. Closet Organizer Systems
Most of us have a difficult time maximizing closet space because we are unable to visualize how to efficiently use such a small area. Closet organizer systems fill that need by creating a variety of shelves, drawers, hooks, and rods that can be adjusted and customized for maximum storage. These units can be somewhat on the expensive side, but they are well worth it if your home has limited closet space. Look for units whose pieces are interchangeable and adjustable. Also look for units that can be easily installed, and easily removed so you can take them with you when you move.

4. Other Innovative Storage Products
Take some time and scour the internet, maybe watch some infomercials, and take a trip to the home renovation store. Keep your eyes open for unique storage products that fit a specific need you have. For instance, one example might be a product which consists of nothing more than durable vinyl bags that are air tight. You place your items the bag, close the seal, then connect your vacuum to a special nozzle system and suck all the air out. The bags are great for spare linens, blankets, comforters, and clothes. They reduce the total amount of space needed by getting rid of the excess air. Products like these aren’t always for everyone, but you might find one or two that are perfect for you.
