Redecorating for $25/week

Don’t Break the Bank

I love shelves. They have a way of cleaning up a space in almost minutes. But finding the right ones, and then keeping them organized? That can lead to a whole other series of questions. But have no fear, all questions have answers. Sure they usually lead to more questions, but its all part of the real adventure.

The first rule to decorating on a budget: Don’t be in a rush. Just because you’ve decided on a schedule doesn’t mean you have to rush through things to follow it. By planning out purchases and taking your time to redecorate, you can avoid making mistakes and achieve the results you want.

Redecorating doesn’t just have to be about the planning. It can be creative and fun! Being creative with what you’ve got can go a long way. Personally,  I’m always in the midst of redecorating, partly because I need a change but also because I love to shop.

Make a Plan

My current home design plan, comes from my love of films. Inspired by great films and movie sets, I imagine my living space as my own personal movie set. Furnishings have been planned out and rely on a paradox of symmetry and controlled chaos.

Building things yourself can be a huge cost-saving project. We’ve decided on building pine “a-frame” shelves. Shelving has been measured and designed to take advantage of our love affair with wicker and metal boxes. Hutched-boxes may come in a myriad of designs, but they are always the same dimensions. The benefit, enough symmetry for smooth lines but not so repetitious as to induce narcolepsy. Our turn at wood working with the shelves is only the beginning of how creative we get with decorating. We have one wall in our home that is always set aside to allow us to be funky. Controlled chaos, a place to be creative and out of sync with our own home designs keeps our characters from being submerged beneath too much sameness.

Consistency in Design

Our home made “a-frame shelves” are identical for ease to replicate. Not only do they maintain a consistent design but they also make apartment cleaning a cinch. The shelves have been measured to accommodate the boxing of discs, video game controllers, clothing, books, and keeping projects in their own contained mess that I don’t have to look at. Keeping clean and organized in this way makes redecorating a cheap and easy affair. Keeping everything in its place is an easy way to revitalize any home in need of a make over.
