The sauna is a Finnish creation with a long history that is still used by the vast majority of Finns today. The popularity of the sauna has been slowly growing around the world to the extent that Americans and Europeans alike are building them in their own homes. But is it feasible for the average person? That depends on where you live and what you’re looking for.

Gatineau storage to keep your extra stuff. You could also annex part of the garage or basement to build a sauna room instead of a stand alone cabin. The dip in the lake can be substituted with a cold shower, though that can be a pain to keep walking to and from the bathroom. If you have a hot tub you could simply reduce the temperature to simulate the cold lake. A swimming pool also works, but not so well during the winter months.
Feasibility also depends on local zoning laws. Your city or town may have no regulations governing the building and use of saunas, but more than likely they do. The larger the city the more restrictive regulations tend to be. Check with your local municipality before planning for a sauna. How far you’re willing to go to satisfy local regulations will have a great deal of weight when deciding if a home sauna is feasible.
One last thing to consider is the cost. In areas where regulations are few, saunas have been built from hand-cut lumber, piled up stones, tool sheds, even box trucks and vans. If you live in an area such as this, you can probably procure the building materials very cheaply. All you’ll have to worry about is a heat source and you’re ready to go. If your local area is more regulated, you might have to follow costly regulations in building your sauna. Pre-made kits are available from a variety of suppliers that will more than likely adhere to most local regulations. Regardless of whether you use a kit or build your own, municipalities that have burdensome regulations will also require costly permits.
If you decide the home sauna is not feasible for you there is another option. Many urban health clubs have sauna and pool facilities available. Membership can be costly, but you have the advantage of using all of the available facilities and programs. Hotels sometimes have pool and sauna memberships that are fairly inexpensive. Call a few in your area and check, you might find one that meets your needs.
