DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

You’re all settled into a brand new house and the first thing you want to do is make it into a home. Where to begin, it can seem overwhelming but it need not be. First off, as always, make a list. Begin with the most urgent renovations/repairs. Once you have a basic list it will be time to decide if these are the kind of renovations or repairs that you can do on your own, or if you’ll need to hire a professional.
Where it comes to electrical systems, plumbing, roofing, foundation and a variety of other specialized areas in your home you will want a professional. The process of renovating your new home doesn’t need to be fraught with stress however. There are going to be plenty of things that you can do yourself.

PICK A ROOM

Having set aside some of the more complicated and expert intensive parts of the house why not pick a room that you can start on. The master bedroom seems a likely place to start. Why there? Well if you want to make a house a home then you need to wake up in your ideal setting every day. Your master bedroom should be a sanctuary so resist the urge to let your work/professional life into this oasis.

SET DESIGN FOR YOUR HOME

Dressing your room, as any good set designer will tell you, is all about the details. Take your time to decide on a color scheme and then follow through. Bringing out the best in the colors that you have chosen will be enhanced by accents.

Having the right furniture to accentuate the colors that you have chosen is important. If you have a bright color on your walls it will help to have window dressings that fit the scheme. It may be your immediate impulse to buy the funkiest furnishings that you can find. While this may reflect your current preferences, tastes do change. Personally I love woods, simply understated furnishings that exude class and style without being too overwhelming. Rich wood picture frames are a great way to warm up a room. Pick a wall and begin a wall photo display of loved ones. Having pictures of fond memories to wake to every day is a positive thing. In the place you call your get away having images of those we love most only helps to reinforce the idea that this is home, the place they always welcome you when you get there.
